24-Hour pH Study Procedure

Welcome to our comprehensive guide on the 24-hour pH study procedure, a vital diagnostic service offered by our gastroenterology practice. This procedure is instrumental in evaluating and diagnosing various gastrointestinal disorders, particularly those related to acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

What is a 24-Hour pH Study?

A 24-hour pH study, also known as esophageal pH monitoring, is a diagnostic test designed to measure the amount and duration of acid reflux events in the esophagus over a 24-hour period. This test helps gastroenterologists assess the frequency and severity of acid reflux episodes, which can aid in the diagnosis and management of conditions such as GERD, laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), and non-acid reflux.

Procedure Overview

During a 24-hour pH study, a thin, flexible catheter with a pH sensor at its tip is inserted through the nose and positioned in the lower esophagus. The catheter is then connected to a small recording device that the patient wears on their belt or shoulder strap. Over the next 24 hours, the pH sensor continuously measures the acidity level in the esophagus, recording any episodes of acid reflux.

Patient Preparation

Before the procedure, patients are instructed to fast for a certain period, typically 4 to 6 hours, to ensure accurate results. They should also avoid certain medications, such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), antacids, and H2-receptor antagonists, as these can interfere with acid production and affect test results.

During the Procedure

The 24-hour pH study procedure typically takes place in an outpatient setting. A trained healthcare provider will insert the catheter through the nose and guide it into the esophagus using specialized equipment. The process is usually well-tolerated by patients and takes only a few minutes to complete.

Once the catheter is in place, patients are given instructions on how to go about their normal activities while wearing the recording device. They are encouraged to maintain their regular diet and activities to provide an accurate reflection of their daily acid reflux patterns.

After the Procedure

After wearing the pH monitoring device for 24 hours, patients return to the clinic to have the catheter removed. The recorded data is then analyzed by our team of experienced gastroenterologists to determine the frequency, duration, and severity of acid reflux events.

Benefits of 24-Hour pH Study

  • Accurate diagnosis of acid reflux-related disorders
  • Tailored treatment plans based on individual reflux patterns
  • Evaluation of treatment effectiveness
